What is SMT and ESD?

Surface-Mount Technology (SMT) is a method in which the electrical components are mounted directly onto the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB). The components to be placed on the boards are usually delivered to the production line in either paper/plastic tapes wound on reels or plastic tubes. Some large integrated circuits are delivered in static-free trays. Numerical control pick-and-place machines remove the parts from the tapes, tubes or trays and place them on the PCB.
The main advantages of SMT are:
- Smaller components
- Much higher component density (components per unit area) and many more connections per component
- Components can be placed on both sides of the circuit board
- Fewer holes need to be drilled. (Drilling PCBs is time-consuming and expensive.)
- Lower initial cost and time of setting up for mass production, using automated equipment.
- Simpler and faster automated assembly. Some placement machines are capable of placing more than 136,000 components per hour.
- Many SMT parts cost less than equivalent through-hole parts.

What is ESD?
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is the sudden flow of electricity between two electrically charged objects caused by contact, an electrical short or dielectric breakdown. A buildup of static electricity can be caused by tribocharging or by electrostatic induction. The ESD occurs when differently-charged objects are brought close together or when the dielectric between them breaks down, often creating a visible spark. Common materials of ESD control are:- Conductive
- Dissipative
- Anti-static
- Insulative
